Hear about Out Of Her Mouth, a new co-commission from Mahogany Opera, Dunedin Consort and HERA
Wednesday 30th November 2022
18:00 - 19:30
Out Of Her Mouth takes three extraordinary cantatas by Élisabeth Jaquet de la Guerre, in bold new translations by Toria Banks, to be staged for the first time in 2023 in partnership with Dunedin Consort and HERA, in atmospheric, accessible settings across the UK. Taken from the Old Testament, each cantata tells a story about sex and power in encounters between men and women, with recitative and 3 or 4 short arias.
In our latest Meet Me @ Mahogany event, hear from Toria Banks as we delve into the provenance of the piece and how the new translations came to life, whilst interrogating more widely the importance of reinventing the old and finding contemporary relevance in ancient works. Facilitated by Edward Edgcumbe from Dunedin Consort, the discussion will also introduce soprano Alys Roberts, & director Mathilde Lopez - artists involved in the project who were selected as part of a unique open call - who will share their thoughts about that process and what it means to be involved in this new piece.
All Meet Me @ Mahogany events are FREE to attend. The discussion will take place in English on Zoom. It will be BSL-interpreted and live-captioned. Please register on Eventbrite to receive the Zoom link for the event. We hope to see you there.
Meet Me @Mahogany is Mahogany Opera’s virtual Open House series, where we share insights and ideas around what we do and how we do it, connecting people to our creative practice.
