Kate Halsall is a pianist, composer and collaborator, whose performances often include new music with improvised elements and electronics, sometimes written for her, by composers including Pippa Murphy, Fumiko Miyachi, Leo Chadburn and Diana Salazar amongst many others. She has commissioned over 40 works for piano/s and ensemble, including for Piano Circus, Cobalt piano duo and her ensemble, Galvanize.
Kate grew up rurally on North Stainmore in the Upper Eden Valley, Cumbria, then trained at the Royal College of Music in London. She has collaborated with many different artists from Fretwork Viols and Michael Clarke Dance Company, to King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford. Recently she has worked with Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs drummer Ewan Mackenzie, aka Dextro and Glasgow based improvising ensemble Sound Thought.
Some previous performances include for BBC Free Thinking Festival, Sound Scotland, Cheltenham Festival, Kings Place, Lang Lang Inspires at Southbank Centre, Barbican Centre, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Cafe Oto, Colorado College, Montclair State University and at The Banff Centre, Canada.
Kate lives near Penrith and teaches at a number of schools across Cumbria. She has previously taught at The Glasshouse (Centre for Advanced Training), Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, University of Kent and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. She has released a number of albums with NMC Recordings, Summerfold Records, Metier and Another Timbre.
