Chisato Minamimura

Performance Artist

Chisato Minamimura is a Deaf performance artist, choreographer and British Sign Language (BSL) art guide, originally from Japan and based in London. Working across live performance, choreography and digital media, she explores the visualisation of sound, music and sensory perception from her unique perspective as a Deaf artist. Through movement, sign language and technology, her work creates immersive experiences that invite audiences to reconsider communication, embodiment and the relationship between sound and silence.

Chisato is currently touring her solo performances Mark of a Woman, exploring women’s stories and tattooing cultures, and Scored in Silence, unpacking the hidden perspectives of Deaf survivors of the atomic bombs in 1945 Japan.

Chisato trained at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and holds a BA in Japanese Painting and an MA from Yokohama National University. Her work has been presented internationally across Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas, including tours throughout the UK, Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland, Tunisia and Venezuela.

She previously collaborated with Nwando Ebizie on Fall and Then Rise (2023).

Alongside performing, Chisato continues to develop innovative interdisciplinary work that combines choreography, visual art and accessible technologies to expand the possibilities of Deaf-led artistic practice.
