Frederic Wake-Walker directs and produces opera and contemporary music theatre at major international opera houses and concert halls while also creating new, ground-breaking work with the independent scene in unconventional spaces. He has directed productions at La Scala Milan, Glyndebourne Festival and the Berlin Philharmonie. He was awarded best director at the inaugural Oper! Awards in Berlin in 2019.
He is one of the team behind Mica Moca Berlin, with whom he curates large-scale multi-disciplinary performances in found spaces.
As artistic director of Mahogany Opera, he conceives new works in collaboration with a diverse range of composers and makers with the aim of stretching the boundaries of what opera can be and who it is for. He is passionate about creating inclusive opportunities for children and young people to engage with music and theatre. Having directed a number of participatory projects, he currently focusses his energy on the award-winning Snappy Operas programme with Mahogany Opera.
Mahogany Opera has been a constant source of learning and inspiration throughout his career where many of his most precious and formative experiences and relationships have been forged.
Frederic’s underlying principles are to be responsive to the specific context of each project, creating a space where everyone can be themselves and give of their best while being respectfully subversive, challenging the status quo from both within and without. Whatever the environment and however the work manifests, he holds the belief that the ultimate creative act lies within the audience and their shared imagination. He is based in Berlin but feels most at home in a rehearsal room.
